I'm making a zine. Super cool stuff, really excited to get going on it.
Possible ideas, content and theme wise.
Emotion based, ie. feeling confused, lost, discouraged etc.
Each piece could have a color to signify individuality.
Reoccurring character/characters, minimalistic design, similar to Don Hertzfeldt style.
Backgrounds will be more photo-realistic, with added elements that relate to the atmosphere or character.
Main characters will be glowing, in order to stand out.
Minimal word usage
I wanna add a cypher in at least one of the pieces, with some cool little made up symbols and a reference to English translation, in the back of the zine.
I'm thinking that most of the backgrounds will be nature based. I want to take pretty simple environments to really highlight how out of place the subjects and characters feel. The settings that aren't nature related will most likely be comprised of simplistic colors and geometric shapes.
My main goal is highlight the confusion, feeling of displacement, melancholy, of my main cast of characters.
Characters
Main character will have very generic/vague features, so that any viewer can put themselves in the character's shoes. He will be the focus of the majority of the pieces.
Monkey-man in a space suit. His environment will highlight how out of place he is.
Heart Guy, one of my reoccurring character in some of my doodles lately. Reflective of main character's heart.
Loose stylistic inspirations
I'm figuring that I'll make all of the backgrounds in Photoshop and then import them into Illustrator, so I can add my characters and subjects, that way I can knock out balancing each program throughout the piece.
